The news about Apple’s images screening makes me realize that these companies are so used to us accepting anything they throw at us, that they are feeling comfortable enough now a days to think THIS is ok. Up until now I’ve always made excuses on how things are bad but their products still make my life somewhat better. I no longer think this is the case! …

Their products are there only to make me addicted to them and then fall pray of needing some other thing that makes my life “easier” to their standards of what living is. Even at work I no longer feel that I need a Mac to do my work and do it well. And since I stopped using big tech social networks I don’t even feel like I need a 24/7 device that is connected to the internet. Either for work or leisure I can do without Google and Apple for the most part (still need a few bank and gov apps) …

This is such a great feeling but also a scary one because now the responsibility lies on me. It’s up to me to take the decision to fully transition to devices and services that respect my freedoms as a human being. And it’s scary because I feel that for a while now I’ve gotten desensitized about this and it’s not a fight I want to own as I used many years ago. It’s also scary because I don’t think becoming zealots or hermits is a viable solution on a personal, sub-cultural and social level …

So … I’m not really sure what this means for me exactly besides, I’ll keep avoiding big tech products and services but I wanted to say this out loud with hopes that others who are feeling this way will reach out and maybe we can try to be closer to each other and inspire each other to find the actual solutions to this problem. I’m not only talking about the fediverse but hopefully also in person … now back to my non digital day playing guitar, making food and reading a paper book
